September 2009 Stroll

The Kalmanson Gallery, 5-8pm:
Sandy Belk

The Kalmanson Gallery features the painterly photographs of Sandy Belk at the Emanuel Arts Center for this month's Second Saturday Art Stroll, September 12, from 5-8 p.m.

Sandy is a graphic and web designer who began exploring photography and painting as a way to enhance her skills as a designer. Her photographs are divided into three different series: photo watercolors, vintage vignettes, and photo abstracts.  She says, "my work involves creating something magical from a moment in time.  Memories are more than a visual record.

Sometimes what we felt is more important than what we saw.  Some memories have a glow to them - almost magic. I try to bring this glow and magic to my work."

Jorge Montero

September 12th - October 4th, 2009

A good poster is the one that catches the viewers’ attention and makes them think and feel. It is the one that touches hearts to convince and make people enthusiastic on the intended message. It is instant information that shows the author reaction and interpretation about the surrounding reality.

These challenging qualities and expectations are what move me to explore and enjoy so much this beautiful area of graphic design. Poster Design is a way to express my statements and feelings about very diverse subjects and concerns. I have found in it a very functional platform to combine my drawings and digital collages with typography in a harmonious connection in order to depict concepts and ideas in creative ways.

John Dunn
Journeys Home

Journeys Home captures the essence of how John Dunn came to feel that this part of the country is home. Many of the photo expeditions were side trips made while wandering back roads home from Georgia Tech where he studied architecture and Georgia Southern where he graduated with a BA in political science. More recently his photo journeys were on the long trips from Augusta and Statesboro after visiting his father during an extended illness. Stopping to take time to enjoy the beauty of the countryside had a therapeutic effect. “I’m very excited about the opportunity to share my love of the great beauty of this part of this area; and hope that, in some small way, the exhibit will help some people look at their surroundings with an added appreciation.”

Seeking Solitude: Isolation in Art

Carl Sandburg commented, “One of the greatest necessities in America is to discover creative solitude.” Though artists draw inspiration from the outside world, a certain degree of solitude is essential for creative thought. Seclusion offers time for reflection, to extract the imagery and emotion our minds will conjure and convert them into artistic representation. Many an artist have created their most powerful work in isolation to the outside world, finding that in self-inflicted detachment they are able to extricate lost parts of themselves. Come to view works of art that visually reflect or have been created within the confines of solitude. 106 N. Green St.

Gallery RFD, 5-8pm:

Unauthorized: Art Without Permission

When works by the graffiti artist Banksy began to be retouched by city council members in the UK to conserve them from, other offending “tags” placed on top of his, the world of the Graffiti book earned a new chapter. After the same artist armed only with a fake beard, extra strength glue and a trench coat walked into four of New York’s most prestigious museums and placed his own work on the walls; artist the world over had a new sense of power. Why are we waiting to put our work in a museum? Unauthorized is about intelligent works of art that don’t wait, works which engage or interact with its surroundings despite laws or authorities who say it shouldn’t. No permission, no problem.106 N. Making It: The Art of Contemporary Craft

While the Industrial Revolution may have worked wonders for the production process in terms of output and standardization, it has arguably written the creator’s role out of the process. As machines replace humans or minimize their necessity in ever more labor fields, we are witnessing nostalgia for the return of a human element, lest automation render us obsolete. Though few are clamoring to give up their tools of convenience, individuation and uniqueness are now novelties as witnessed in the rising popularity of mass-customization.Gallery RFD proudly presents Making It, a wide array of works that highlight craftsmanship, contemporary craft, and the evidence of the human hand. 106 N. Four Feet: The Proxemics of Personal Space

Coined in 1966 by anthropologist Edward T. Hall to describe the measurable space between two people interacting, proxemics defines four feet as the comfortable limit of what we know as personal space. Breeching this imagined territory is perceived as a threat; step outside it and one enters the more public domain of social space. How we negotiate these virtual spheres, whom we allow in them and how we defend them is the subject of Gallery RFD’s upcoming exhibition, Four Feet: The Proxemics of Personal Space. 106 N. Green St.

Boneyard, 8-9:30:

American Gun

South Carolina's American Gun sifts Uncle Tupelo, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen through a filter of southern gothic story-telling and rock 'n' roll energy, coming out with a batch of pure, stripped-down twang 'n' roll. They claims to have drawn influences from country, folk and blues...What the bold claim doesn't fully explain is that the band has taken the genres out into the backyard, kicked them around in the dust until they're good and dirty, then shot a bolt of lightning through them. The quintet takes the archetypical arrangements—the roots rock that we're all so familiar with—and pistol-whips it into something more primitive, distilling the old, wild outlaw spirit into a powerful 'shine that turns countrified folk into rock stars. 212 S. Green St.

114, 5-8pm:
Pass Through Without Any Noise
Isaac Amala & Liz Simpson

Using thousands of acquired neckties, Isaac Amala and Liz Simpson create large scale sculptural installations. In the popular consciousness, neckties often promise little more than modes of conformity. As a building block, however, these elongated, quadrangular textiles offer a radical trajectory from the world of banal business transactions to one of soft craft, and flamboyant geometry. The forms also highlight our formal wear's most formal elements: through color interaction, repetition of shape, and by considering and transcending the original associations inherent to the materials. In Pass Through Without Any Noise, as with previous works, the piece is always the result of the repetition of an individual unit, built upon itself. Any given necktie may be lost in the mass while remaining both parallel and distinct.114 W. Main St.

The Train Wrecks offer up raucous and rollicking Americana that’s as equally indebted to the traditionalist legacies of A.P. Carter and Johnny Cash as it is to the forward-thinking rock & roll of Wilco and Lucero. Reviewers have been “blown away” by the band’s live shows, and the Wrecks have been officially dubbed “The Hardest Gigging Band in Savannah”. 212 S. Green St.

Miller (Athens) and Wadley's own Willie Tarver.

An avid collector and conversationalist, Dr. Norton regularly travels the Southeast's back roads in search of compelling work and treasures the stories he collects from the artists he meets as much as the art they produce. Representing the later generation of artists who follow in the footsteps of these three Georgia folk heroes is Athens-based Chris Hubbard, who pays homage to his elders with sculptural portraits Miller, Tarver, Finster and himself. An artist talk with Norton, Tarver and Hubbard begins at 6:30 p.m. 106 N. Green St.
