Swainsboro’s Art Incubator project was created in the fall of 2006. The Art Incubator consists of a city wide effort to boost economic development in downtown Swainsboro through the arts. The Art Incubator project is an innovative approach at revitalizing this rural community by developing an emerging art hub that promotes and celebrates the unique culture and creativity found in historic downtown Swainsboro. The Art incubator is funded solely by the Georgia Rural Economic Development Center and run by representatives of Gallery RFD.

Downtown Commission for Arts and Commerce
Economic Enrichment, Cultural Advancement

The Downtown Commission for Arts and Commerce (DCAC) is a co-operated organization that sponsors events, projects, and performances for downtown Swainsboro. The DCAC underwrites quality, live monthly concerts, theatrical performances and dance productions. All performances are held in downtown Swainsboro and presented for the community at little or no charge. These events offer Swainsboro residents and visitors the opportunity to experience premiere entertainment of a competitive nature with neighboring cities.

Goals:
The Downtown Commission for Arts and Commerce’s goals are three-fold:
1. To offer positive, quality, competitive programming in an effort to raise the standard of living, resources, and opportunities available to residents
2. To encourage surrounding cities to visit and patronize downtown Swainsboro
3. To promote downtown businesses, DCAC supporters, and performers through extensive advertising in local and outside publications, media and markets

History:
As part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), under Roosevelt, a huge Federal Arts Project was developed to boost economic development and cultural conservation. The WPA sponsored hundreds of mural, writing, music, and arts projects for communities across the United States including Swainsboro, GA. The creation of the DCAC was partly inspired by the historical successes of these project and new economic and social theories by Richard Florida. Florida’s underlying idea is that if you attract, sponsor, and keep creative people in your community, it will prove to make your region a more attractive place for economic and social growth.

Impact:
DCAC events will boost Swainsboro’s visibility among surrounding communities. Live monthly concerts, theatrical performances and dance productions, paired with the Art Stroll, will secure Swainsboro’s place as an emerging hub for arts and entertainment. Local merchants will receive more business from visitors in the downtown region and this will spur economic growth in the region. Local residents will remain in Swainsboro to patronize and experience numerous art exhibits, business specials and the monthly performances.
